“Where as the Holy Quran commands us to be obedient to the parents and to be serviceable to them, it also says: “Your Lord knows best what is in your minds; if you are righteous, then surely, He is Most Forgiving to those who turn to Him again and again.” (17:26)
God knows it quite well as to what is there in your hearts; if you are righteous, then you should know that God forgives those who turn to Him. The Champions of the Holy Prophet, sallallaho alaihi wa sallam, were also confronted with hardships, and for religious reasons their relations with their parents were strained. But of course, it is for you to try all you can to be good to them and to look after them as best lies in your power; you should not lose any opportunity to serve them. Your good intentions will bring you good rewards. If you have to get yourselves separated from them, because of your religion, that, of course, is a thing, that you cannot help. But you should always keep in mind that you have to try to be good to them; your intentions must always be very good. You should supplicate to God for them.
It is not only you who have been made to confront with this kind of situation. Hazrat Ibrahim, peace be upon him, had also to pass through the same circumstances. However, you should know that your duty to God comes first. You should give preference to Him and try to do your duty to your parents as well; you should also be praying for them – and you should be very sincere in whatever you do. Your intentions must always be good.” -Malfoozat Vol. 10, pg. 131

Tapping into my childhood and how I’d spend my free time brings back countless memories.
I’d read my favorite books and fantasize whitewashing the fence with Tom Sawyer or buying the little doll for Cosette in Les Miserables or helping Oliver Twist out of his misery.
I’d paint senselessly. Half the time it was really just doodling but then there were the occasional masterpieces of birds, flowers and cartoon characters.
I’d play with our doves, canaries, lovebirds and African Grey parrot. I’d try to adopt little stray kittens and have baby birds sleep next to me at nighttime.
I’d watch Bollywood movies and Disney cartoons in languages I didn’t understand and sing along with them.
I’d run around the house and imagine that I was playing hide and seek with my imaginary older brother.
I’d collect new released books and wrap them in gift wrap paper so they wouldn’t get damaged and save them for the summers to read with my favorite cousin.
I’d unwrap my toys out of their boxes, play with them a bit and then put them back into their boxes so they wouldn’t collect any dust.
I’d take my little doll, which would cry when I’d turn her over, everywhere and have her be part of my regular activities.
I’d count my stamps and colorful stationary that I had collected over the years and reorganize them by country, color, theme or however I pleased on that day.
I’d sit by the window for hours and pray to have lots of rain, sunshine, snow or wind so schools would close and I could just sleep five minutes longer.
I’d stick as close to the wall on the top bunk of my bed in the mornings so my sister couldn’t reach me and wake me up for school.
I’d go to sleep early at nights so I could listen to my favorite radio station’s bedtime stories.
I’d play with my toys for hours quietly and would ask for french fries for dinner.
I’d walk up and down our little block and get some change to buy a popsicle or sunflower seeds.
I’d get all excited for my family’s Friday night outings, would dress up and wait impatiently for everyone else to get ready.
I’d watch our neighbor cook and sit with her for hours and knit scarves.
I’d have long chats with my grandmother about everything and anything and chew her ears out.
I’d imagine to be a teacher like my mom with a classroom of dolls or a producer like my dad with my own set of camera crew.
Although my childhood had quite a number of stressful moments, as a whole it was stress-free. Was it that I was shielded from hardships or maybe I just knew how to deal with stress? Maybe it was both.

There’s no doubt that we’re all environmentally conscious. We all know the environment’s wellbeing is directly co-related to our wellbeing. Yet, isn’t it ironic that we all read or have magazine or newspaper subscriptions, buy books, print useless stuff at work and continuously waste paper? What’s even more sad is that we actually turn to environmental magazines for news on how to save the environment and print countless material for environmental presentations and conferences.
International Paper, a major Staples supplier, “sold 5.7 million acres of its forestland, which represented nearly 90 percent of our U.S. lands.” The company presently owns about 500,000 acres in the U.S., and they own, manage or have harvesting rights to nearly 2 million acres of forestlands in Brazil and Russia.”
They are asked: “Why not make higher recycled-content paper and minimize harvesting?” They answer: “We agree, and are working to get there. Our industry’s waste reduction record is enviable. We’ve invested billions toward maximizing utilization in our harvesting and manufacturing processes. We now use every bit of the stem of the tree, and we have made important improvements in recycling technology. (Earlier this year, FPAC companies set a collective target to increase paper recovery rates in Canada by 25%)” (Click here for source)
While their efforts are commendable, they obviously must supply and meet the demand. Sadly, when recycled paper is used, price of the magazines or newspapers may rise, which subsequently reduces readership and companies may consider profitability and go back to cutting down trees.
We must remember that every corporation’s number one aim is PROFIT and nothing else. Otherwise they would either cease to exist or be forced to seek costly alternatives. Sure we can recycle the newspapers, magazines and all other useless material but isn’t that a reactive approach? Proactive thinking would be to consider how much would be saved if we all stopped buying and reading magazines, newspapers, and even books and demanded online access to the information?
Time after time, I manage to prove to myself that there’s always room for self-improvement and progress. If we wish the world to change then we must make serious effort and radical changes in our lifestyle and aim to become better at recognizing our own flaws. Only then can we truly say that we are environmentally aware and friendly.

I wonder how many think it’s alright to do a little evil for a greater good. I recently watched the movie American Gangster
and was overcome with questions.
I wonder how many of us would return a million dollars if we just happened to find it in an abandoned car.
I wonder how many of us would actually have the decency to report our own friend if she/he had hurt someone or done even worse.
I wonder how many of us would think that hurting others would be fine, as long as it was for our families to be safe and wealthy.
I really wonder. Are we really so lost to differentiate between right and wrong? Or do people believe that right and wrong has its own set of grey shades?

Next time you decide to threaten or cause bodily harm to yourself or another, behave violently towards another person or knowingly show lack of mental competence to care for yourself, think twice!
In Canada, Form 1, “also referred to as an APA (Application for Psychiatric Assessment), allows a doctor to hold you in a hospital for up to 72 hours to complete a psychiatric assessment. “
“Once a Form 1 is signed, it lasts for 7 days. After 7 days have expired, it is no longer in effect and a doctor would have to examine you and issue another Form 1. Within those 7 days, another person, usually a police officer, has the authority to take you immediately to a psychiatric hospital. The Form 1 does not allow anyone to detain you in jail or in any other institution other than a psychiatric hospital.”
Form 1 can be followed up with a release, making the subject an informal/voluntary or even an involuntary patient. Here’s all you need to know about Form 1.

Though I’m sure others have thought of this, I’m going to amuse myself yet again and consider coining this as another new revelation to save money!
How many socks do you own? How many are the same style, and color? What happens when one sock is torn or discolored? Do you throw both out? Sure you do, unless you have another pair that looks just like the first one.
So, what’s the lesson here? Buy the same brand, style and color of socks. This way, if one gets ruined, you still have the other to use and now you have a new money saving solution for yourself and your family!

My mother was diagnosed (or rather ‘misdiagnosed’) with Parkinson’s disease over 10 years ago. Her life’s been a roller coaster since. Although her condition worsens every month, her strength is astonishing.
She was admitted to emergency yesterday due to complications. Though she refuses to accept it, she must have accidentally taken the wrong medication in the morning causing a serious level of drowsiness and sleepiness that is alarming even over 32 hours later. Simply put, she overdosed.
I can’t remember how many times she’s been to hospitals due to various complications. I’ve lost count. I can’t say I’m happy about her condition or would ever wish it on anyone’s mother to go through or another daughter or son to see their mother in such a state.
Yet after all this, I am grateful and feel blessed. I thank God for watching over her when she is at times no longer able. I’m thankful for his guidance and light. I’m thankful for the strength he gives our family to at least pretend to smile and joke although we’re all hurting inside and want to do nothing but scream and cry.
There’s no “but”, I have no “buts”. I’m just grateful.

Do you really know which diaper cream or eye cream is the safest to use? What about shampoos and makeup? When pregnant, what products are safe for the mother and poison for the baby? (See Something has come between me and my Calvins and Sexy for her, For baby it could really be poison)
Christian Dior, Estée Lauder, Avon, Elizabeth Arden, L’Oréal, Vaseline, Palmer’s, Gerber, Pantene, Aveeno, Calvin Klein, Johnson & Johnson. Of the above cosmetic brands, which would you guess is safest to use? (See Ten ugly truths behind the myth of Cosmetic Safety)
The products that are considered hazardous are linked to cancer, developmental/reproductive toxicity, violations, restrictions and warnings, allergies/immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation, organ system toxicity, enhanced skin apsorption, contamination concerns, and occupational hazards.
I believe we should be completely aware and conscious of the products we use and not trust a few commercials and campaigns as total sources of truth. There’s more to product safety than a rose scented baby cream or a well packaged shampoo claiming to be pure.
If there’s one website you should look at today, it’s Cosmetic Database! Please research the products you use and understand what’s in them. Don’t shop blindly.
